The citadel of Sighisoara - one of the most spectacular and mysterious urban citadels in Transylvania, presents itself as a valuable historical monument offering a lively encounter with the past.
Sighisoara is considererd to be the most beautiful and well preserved inhabited citadel in Europe, with an authentic medieval architecture. In Eastern Europe Sighisoara is one of the few, and in Romania the only fortified town which is still inhabited
Situated beside the Tarnava Mare river, the citadel of Sighisoara was founded by german settlers in the 12th century. The first documentary evidence dates from 1298.
The town's most famous landmark is the clock tower, wich initially served as the main entrance to the citadel. For centuries it also housed the town hall.
